[cod] Cod4 Pings unusually high

It is strange because in most other games, increasing cl_maxpackets
does increase your ping. Cod4 seems to do the opposite however. The
only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with the
logic they used for calculating ping, and more importantly, when the
server actually gets around to doing it. I noticed pings only update
on the scoreboard once every two seconds. Raising your maxpackets
could mean that the ping request/reply process (however it is handled)
completes a few frames sooner.

It's important to remember that in game ping is completely different
than your icmp echo "ping". An icmp echo is handled by the OS pretty
much on demand, while the in game ping is done using completely
different logic which happens at a certain point in the game loop,
every so many frames. In a nutshell I guess I'm saying the in game
pings may not be accurate. I have seen the code in several other games
and read long arguments about why the methods used are or are not
accurate,
unfortunately I have not and probably never will see the
code for this game. Of course there is always the chance that there is
so much server side processing going on that it really does raise your
ping that much.

All of the numbers I've seen so far in this thread have been
consistent with what I have observed on my own. It's frustrating
because I know I ping around 18ms to choopa.com servers in Jersey,
when I actually join one I see 30 or 40+ in game.

I only saw about a 10 ping decrees with the maxpackets set too 100.
You would think that increasing your packet rate would increase net
traffic and possibly driving the ping up..
Server side make sure sv_fps is set to 20, increasing it will
increase the ping unless the client's snaps is = too or > then the
servers sv_fps.
In the end, Yes CoD4 runs a higher ping
rate then other games. Here
on my LAN server in game my client will have an average ping of 17,
with a high of 24. Other games such as TF2, HL2MP, Source Forts all
ping 5-10. I do not recall what BF2 averaged

On your client have you tried setting cl_maxpackets to 100? Lowered
my ping on my server from 60 to 28.

Well, i guess it's not just me. I'm positive its the game because I
triple checked ports, made sure SElinux is disabled, etc. I've
tweaked
my server config settings like max_rate and such and still nothing
helps. I've tried different ports other than the standard 28960 and
that
did nothing. My Tf2 server runs a steady 53ms whereas my Cod4 on the
same box is pinging 88ms average in game, not via a server browser.
So
 yeah its about 30ms difference;
about the same as you're getting.
It's
gotta be something in the game. Maybe something with 64bit? My
server is
dual core operton 1210, 2gb ram, centos.
