I believe this is incorrect -- the game will ALWAYS try to write to
$HOME/.callofduty4 (whatever that happens to be in your env) regardless of
what fs_homepath is set to.  I ran into the same error while working on my
wrapper script (I was dropping privs from root, but it was maintaining
HOME=/root in my ENV until I manually overrode it), even though I was
specifying full path to a writable directory.  This folder only serves to
hold another copy of punkbuster, from what I can tell.

fs_homepath still does affect search order/path for locating .iwd's and
cfgs, however.
