AW: [cod] Combining maps and skins

We are running a server with AWE 3b9 and a mappack of 85 MB, fs_game set to
a name, no one else will use, so it won?t give problems with any other
modified servers running AWE 3b9 and any mappacks.

And as long as you put in the ReadMe-files into the mappack and as long as
you don?t modify the maps it should be no problem to use mappacks... As
admin you don?t have another choice if you want to hold your server running
and react to the wishes of your community...

IW should fix the mistake with iwd sum/missmatch soon, it is not much fun to
administrate a CoD2-server, running from one problem into the next... And it
is an old mistake, we had it in COD, so it should not been done again, but
ok, that?s the way it went...

Thanks guys for the response. And will use the fs_game to not make any
trouble.

Illegal is probably the wrong word, ideally I would say check the readme
with any map (open up the .iwd file with zip), if an author says not to
redistrubute without permission I would ask for it. Many may say in the
readme they are ok as long as the readme that came with the original zip is
included as well (so its obvious who the originator is). Try to keep any
unique names to your paks to avoid possible conflicts with paks similarlarly
named players may already have from elsewhere.

Not sure why people can't get a map pack to work with any mod, (although
not sure which map pak, so might be something in that), we have custom paks
working with mods fine, and only use fs_game when there's a speciifc mod to
be used.

Another possible alternative for some would be to keep the same base or
fs_game , but move paks in/out from a central place just as part of a dos or
bash script (if you use a diff fs_game you need to restart server anyway).
We've done that before when there's been some weird combos of mods and maps
and people want to switch between them but keep the base gametype or mod so
it matches the filter queries.

It is not illegal, however creating map packs at random can create
problems for users. Be sure to use fs_game and it should, in theory, work.
I have never got a map pack to work with any mod.
