Why you don't use tcpdump -i <interface name> and see what traffic is
created.. And of course why don't you use
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -j LOG --log-prefix "INPUT packets : "
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -j LOG --log-prefix "OUTPUT packets : "
iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -j LOG --log-prefix "FORWARD packets : "
iptables -A INPUT -p udp -j LOG --log-prefix "INPUT packets : "
iptables -A OUTPUT -p udp -j LOG --log-prefix "OUTPUT packets : "
iptables -A FORWARD -p udp -j LOG --log-prefix "FORWARD packets : "
To log your traffic and see what is dropped and what isn't.
Good luck.

I work predominantly with redhat based distributions and it isnt
available on there per default on a minimum installation. Are you using BSD?
Anyway netstat is available virtually on any box so i am sticking with
that ;-)
