Thanks.  In essence, the way you described is the way it is run now.
However it is /home/jim/cod
And all dirs/owners/groups/etc. are correct.

pbalias.dat and pbstat.dat just don't appear to have been created
anywhere.

Well you should start the server as the user. So lets say if you have
the 
server at /home/johnny

johnny would be the user.

so

cd /home
chown johnny johnny -R
chgrp johnny johnny -R



then start her up.
