[cod] 1.3 patch has ruined my clan

Thanks for the additional insight. I agree with you 100%, Linux versions of the server shouldn't be the Afterthought that they now seem to be. I just didn't see yelling at IW or Activision about this as being productive. Perhaps I was wrong.

That statement is only partially true. Activision is involved and so is IW. Yes icculus, and Ryan specifically wrote the Linux server, but I believe it goes through Activision/IW QA. If that weren't the case I know Ryan would have probably fixed the Linux problem the day it was found. I personally am pretty tired of Linux being second class in a lot of cases. I played MOHAA, and SH and EA could care less about a Linux server. It was the fine folks at icculus that hooked us up. That being said, Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam are EA games also, but they have decent servers and PB support. UT has always had great Linux support including their web interface. I work with ClansElite and we host games, mainly on Linux. I would not continue with the business if I was forced to host only on Windows. We run games on Windows that we have to (RvS, Breakthrough, Halo, etc), but anything that runs on Linux is on Linux. Windows sucks for reliability. I had a BT server that stopped responding to rcon commands. The solution? The Windoze cureall, reboot. That just sucks.
Companies need to start realizing that a lot of people buy games for the online play. A lot of that happens on Linux. Making Linux inferior doesn't help anyone. I won't be buying Ubi's upcoming Far Cry. I've played the demos, game looks great, BUT if there's no Linux server you can count me out. They won't do it for RavenShield, so I doubt it's happening for Far Cry either.
Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now. :-) Yeah, this touched a nerve... I like CoD, and I think IW has done a great job, it's just they need to get serious about Linux.

It's up to the fine folks at icculus.org to fix the Linux server. Thats
what this mailing list is all about, issues with the Linux server. I don't
think IW has
anything to do with the Linux server either.

  Hello all.

Indeed, this is quite a bug, and could kill linux servers if not fixed.
Common sense would suggest that it will be fixed soon. I know there are
    IW
people that subscribe to this list, and one has already acknowledged the
    bug
[thanks Bryan! =]. However, it would be great if someone from IW could
    take
it one step further and tell us the answer to the question that is on the
minds of all the penguin server admins - when is an official fix going to
    be
released? Being somewhat versed in the intricacies of organizations, and
FULLY versed in the lack of communication that often plagues a large-scale
effort - such as a company producing a game patch - I realize that there
probably is not an answer to that question yet.

If that is the case, can we at least hear that it's going to be fixed
    before
the next patch? Personally, I tire of 90% of my inbox consisting of cod
mailing list emails every day when I return from classes, and I think a
semi-formal response from IW would partially squelch the defeatists that
fill our inboxes up with despairing emails. Jim brings up a good point -
some people will never be happy. But I know I am not alone when I assert
that at least some of us would be happy with an update on the problem.

Thanks IW for making what I think is the best multiplayer FPS ever (y'all
don't get enough credit! and yes, I'm from the South =P).

The effect that I've seen with the MP44 is bad. However, there is a not
so subtle
effect with the SMG's. It's no where near as bad as the MP44. It is
slight in comparison,
but it is noticable.

I sure it will be fixed also. However, I'm like a lot of people and
wonder why I haven't
seen ANY indication as to when. It seems like quite a bug to let wait
until the next patch.

The only weapon that's causing the wrong place firing effect is the
german MP44. I've tried many different servers, did burst, iron view,
all kinds of types of firing modes but the only weapon was MP44 that I
found acting up. Big deal! It'll be fixed I'm sure.

Ok, so you know about the bug. Is there any indication that it will be
fixed anytime soon?

I've not had the problem of people deserting our server. I actually had
fewer people on the
server when we converted to 1.2 because of the time it took to show up
in people's ingame browsers.
We now have a steady stream of regulars that show up regardless.

I am noticing something interesting here. From what I can tell, IW
takes great pride in producing
this game. Most of the developers are the original guys that did MOHAA.
I remember the crap that
EA games went through with their non-support of MOHAA. Now IW and
Activision seem to be taking the
same amount of guff, but it's because of the changes that are being
made. Some people will never
be happy.

Not much to say. We know about the bug.

Our server is empty for the first time since it came up (same day as
1.2 came out). This can only be due to the recognition of the linux
recoil problem. Though I don't want to slag off all the hard work
that's has gone into this patch, one has to question the validity of
the beta testing process that was used. Surely this kind of error must
be picked up before release. It's really disappointing to see a great
patch being undermined by what amounts to poor quality assurance. It's
also disappointing to see no word on it from IW on it on here.

That explains a lot. Thanks Bryan!
people also keep playing the old versions so it splits people up
more. Right now there are 2600 people playing 1.1 or 1.2 and 7400
playing 1.3.

I realize that. I love the patch and I have no problems with it
other than my server is empty, which was kind of empty before as
well but I was expecting a rush of people who wanted to test 1.3. I
did get thousands of
hits on my site and people downloaded the patches and files worth of
20GB
in just the first day. I'm glad IW worked on this patch and I'm
certainly
satisfied with the outcome. But I've read hundreds of posts on my
          site
people complaining about one thing or another. Ironically it doesn't
work that way and people don't realize that.
I won't waste more time, we've got big discussions going on my
forums anyways. But I'm a happy camper.

Some people really know how to motivate people to do what you want
them to! Every time they release a patch there is a flurry of "you
guys suck" emails on this list that contribute absolutely nothing
to a solution and
waste everyone's time. But thanks for sharing your feelings.

The patch has had no impact on my server's utilization versus 1.2,
it's still full most of the time. Lag appears about the same.
That's not to say it hasn't had that impact on other servers, but
it's really very difficult
to predict exactly how something is going to behave on the
            tremendous
array of systems and server software that are out there running the
            game.

Obviously, if it were really that easy to fix the in-game browser
problem it would have been done already.

     -d

And the in-game browser still doesn't work. You'd think they
would hire a DBA to handle this. Or at least an entry level
coder. It can't be that hard to make it work right. The quality
of this game is taking a plunge. If there was something else
comparable, I'd switch and drop this game.

You can read about it here

it's mostly about shooting in wrong places but a lot of other
              people
    were
upset, not sure for what other reasons, some installation issues
              and
    others.

Can someone tell me what Problem (on 1.3) we are talking about? I
just installed 3 Linux Servers and am pretty interested what kind
                of Bug is
in the 1.3 Patch.

Thx.

                So
              if
acc> it's working for me, it's gotta be not the patch. Correct?

Seriously, We went from having two full COD 1.2 servers 24/7 to
two empty, laggy, weapons shooting to the side, crappy servers.
                    Thanks IW!

How do we as Linux admins recover from this patch? I have
installed a weapons mod to (I think) correct the weapons
issues, but I think most users see the 'LD' next to my servers
and avoid like the plague. Maybe Im wrong.

Also, the servers are periodically more laggy than before.....
and no, Im not paranoid. I have admined over 20 different Linux
games, dozens of mods, etc. I am telling you this patch is
laggy. I cant find any obvious reason for it, but its there.

What are we to do now?

Luke
