Alas, the files are indeed nVidia DDS thumbnail textures, mislabeled as 
PNG's in the map directories. And unfortunately Mozilla doesn't have any 
knowledge of how to display them. Does anyone know of a conversion utility 
to translate them to true PNG or JPEG?
