bfv static-ness poll

so i've been dicking w/ this too long (i guess i should have made a snapshot
build of crap that i've fixed to expose more fuckups), but the static build
issue is getting out of hand. pruning things out of the debian build is
tricky since the compiled libraries have all of the locale support (maybe i
answered yes to the wrong question when setting up). 

anyway, if people don't mind testing the dynamic version (or the static
version requiring 2.3) i'll try to make a new snapshot. if people do mind
then i'll keep whacking away at this to trim more stuff out to see if the
linker can just get rid of all of localization stuff
