Seemed to need it - I upgraded to unstable, and now its running ok. 

right i knew i was linked against .so.6 but i was more polling if people
were going to have 2.3.x or if 2.2.x was still going to be the norm.
 
since i'm rolling a new build i'll take the time to see if i can make it
like 1.6 and static for libc and libm too. i don't have a static libpthread
(i don't know if such a beast exists) so that is out
