[bf1942] Work around for 1.5 under FreeBSD

I'd like to 3rd this.  I mirror Michael's comments below.  We rely on
FreeBSD as do many other large hosting houses.  I would also have to
resort to hackery (nice work Steve!) and pre-1.5 versions if this is not
fixed.  Thanks!
