This has not been my experience with Half-Life/Counter-Strike. I ran a CS server for a couple of years, and Valve always was upfront about announcing an upcoming patch, then making the server available the day before the client so admins could get updated first, *including* the Linux version, then letting the hordes have at it.

It's probably one reason they're *still* making money of that game (how old is it? 4 years? 5 years??)
