Hehe nice point ck was just leaving the house so was a rushed post.
--debug / --verbose are nice but wont make that much difference IMO
better to wait till the debug us taken out, compile time option etc,
which is something that wont happen to most of the big bugs are sorted.
Personally I like UgLy's idea compile with i686 but only when we move
to release.
Of those asking for less debug / performance enhancements now it
would be interesting to see how many have actually recompiled their
systems with said flags :D

That's where you are wrong. Udo's point is clear and understandable, and
the idea of having a --debug or --verbose switch in the server source or
even on the command line is not too far-fetched (in fact, almost all *ix
software has it), neither is it hard to build in (I guess 2 or 3 lines
of code). It's also a usability issue; and it's not too hard to
implement. It's going to have to happen anyway.
I don't second the request for optimized compiling, though, because it
really is too early for that.
Moreover, before you start telling people to "brush up", you might want
to brush up on what "sensible quoting" means in comparison to "full
quoting". :-)
