I've found that 4.8 isn't quite the best BSD to run on.  5.1 is still a 
tech release but I';ve got it running on two servers and my laptop VERY 
stabley.  One of the things that you absolutely need to do is recompile 
the kernel with:

options      COMPAT_LINUX and make sure rc.conf has linux_enable="YES".  
Making sure you have the latest linux_base-8 installed might help as well.
