[bf1942] [OT] Patch petition

You must be a gamer - noone else could come up with such a useless reply.

I'm merely pointing out that BF1942 is still woefully inadequate when
compared to other dedicated server software, and that is looks like Andreas
is finally getting it on the right track - but that software releases like
BF1942 make my life as a server administrator harder, which hardly seems
fair. We run a fair chunk of the Battlefield 1942 servers in Australia and
it is a pain in the ass to do considering the downfalls of the software and
its near-total lack of administrative functionality.

I harp on about this regularly because unless developers and publishers
realise what a huge issue this is WHILE they're making the game, it means
people like us are stuck in patch hell limbo while we wait for them to get
it right. Not only that, the gamers have to struggle against horders of
idiots that can't behave responsibly in the server.

I don't play BF1942, or in fact any online games, really. I just want
developers and publishers to stop releasing poor server software that they
expect us to run in order for people to be able to play their games.

Just my 2c; the guys responding on this list have demonstrated that they're
quite aware of the problems and are actively looking at ways to fix it. I
sure don't blame the programmers for these problems; they're design issues
that we're obviously not considered at all - sadly, very few developers
consider the sheer social implications that their game faces when they're
developing multiplayer games. Without a) token cheat protection (pure mode
stops a lot of simple hacks) b) uniqueID banning systems and c) some
remotely useful TK system, games really shouldn't be put on the shelf.

Again, don't get me wrong, I'm not criticising Andreas (I'm on a few server
development lists and its great to see someone like him that actually has a
clue and is willing to respond so frequently with useful updates) and think
he's doing a great job. I'm just hoping that the problem of poor-quality
dedicated server software (when developers expect third parties to be
running them and basically maintaining the community for their game) will be
realised and considered at design time, instead of post-release time. Maybe
Andreas could kick that upstairs to the designers and pass on a virtual slap
for me :)
