It's because of new data, protocol changes and new features in both
client and server.

As you say, once the next update is out we can release Linux updates
much more frequently.

Is that because of a protocol change that requires a roll of the client?

Presumably updates that don't require client changes can come out more 
frequently, once the new client is released. (But please include a build

number in the tarball name to help us distinguish them.)

Obviously client updates are more problematic, as the support cost is 
several orders of magnitude higher.
