Ah, sorry for the noise, but I decided to strace it to check my work
and found an earlier place for it, which actually fills many variables
with garbage if the data file isn't found. Here's a better patch to
error out earlier, and I'm almost sure this time I did get the first
one.

Disregard previous patch, please.
