2012/05/18:

Fall 2006: decide to return to school, start surveying local colleges.
Nearest 4-year college which will take part-time undergrad: CSU Fullerton.
Transfer requirements include a couple classes I didn't have.

March 2007: Start my first class (for transfer) at a local community college.
It was nerve-wracking: could I balance work and school? Could I even still
"do" college? How would it go, with most of my classmates a hair over half
my age?

Summer 2008: transfer classes and prep completed, admitted to CSUF. More
GEs taken at community college.

Spring 2009-Spring 2012: part-time undergrad. 7 semesters. Two summer
sessions. Two intersessions.

30 classes after starting...

...graduation.

It's tough to do at the "wrong" time. It's really tough to take that first
step, and if one takes it seriously, there's a lot of initial uncertainty.

For me, it proved doable. I had a supportive work environment, and lots of
encouragement from friends and family.

It's been a five year slog, but... it's nice to finally finish.

Congratulations to all the grads out there!
2012/01/26:

Eight semesters down (plus some preparation/transfer courses), one to go!

May 2012, here I come!

(It'll be nice to no longer be the only non-degreed person in a meeting. I
get to graduate to The Only Person Without A Graduate Degree...)

(Oh, and I think I said this before, but:
It's MUCH easier to do this in the correct order and at the correct time.
It's phenomenally harder to manage when you have a full-time job, and
even harder when you need to balance family/life obligations, a job, and
school.)

2011/05/10:

A word of advice (updated):

Not only should one do things in the proper order (returning to college
while working full-time is one heck of a balancing act), two classes is
pretty much the practical maximum. I've done three for the last two
semesters (the reason is unimportant), and it has been flatly
overwhelming.

Don't backfill if you can avoid it -- and don't overload if you decide
to do it :-)

2010/05/04:

A word of advice:

Try to do things in the proper order. Returning to school while working
full-time is a much, much larger commitment than it appears to be from
a distance.

It's not fun to juggle.

I strongly, strongly recommend high school, college, degree, work, marriage.

Life is WAY less complicated and frustrating that way :-)
